Negative Human Influences on the Region
The area experienced quite a large strain during the 1970s and 1980s, facing isusses involving the rising population, large amounts of soil erosion and water pollution from pesticides, and off-shore oil drilling. Fishermen in northern Java had large declines in fish catches near extinction of several species by the 1980's due to pollution.
As a result of soil erosion from deforestation, caused massive amount of Siltation into the surrounding ocean, covering coral reefs and smothering them of light, in turn, killing them and the immediate ecosystem. As a result of Over-fishing by Americans and Japanese, many areas that were once lively and plentiful with fish are now barren. Next to over-fishing, destructive fishing such as Dynamite fishing or Poison fishing is still commonly used in Southeast Asia, which can harm or destroy a fish habitat.
